Fish Oil Vs. Flaxseed Oil - Which One is Better?

For vegans, the question of whether flaxseed oil is better than fish oil is a moot point. Their dietary restrictions eliminate the fish oil, so they consume flax seed oil to supplement their diets.

Does flaxseed oil provide the same omega-3 fatty acids, however?

Most health authorities agree that eating fatty fish provides a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Eating fish that are high in fat has been proven to lower triglycerides. It can cause high blood pressure to go down very quickly and it can lower the risk of heart disease. Eating fatty fish can also help reduce chronic inflammation. Recent research has suggested that chronic inflammation is the underlying cause of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure and other diseases. Eating fish, or taking supplements that contain the oils from fatty fish, however, are not without risks.

Pollution Problems With Fish Oil

Pollution is a huge factor in weighing the pros and cons of flax seed oil over oil that has been extracted from fish. Over the last 30 years, toxic water contaminants have found their way into the bodies of fish that swim in the polluted water. Arsenic, dioxins, PCBs, DDT, mercury and other contaminants found in fish have varied by locale, species, whether the fish are farmed or wild. While swordfish are found to have the highest levels of mercury, salmon have been found to have very little mercury in their bodies, but have higher amounts of toxins such as arsenic.

Farmed vs. Wild Salmon

Ironically, farmed salmon have more toxic contaminants than wild salmon, however. This has been attributed to contaminants found in the food they are given. Discovery of the high levels of contaminants in farmed salmon have spawned recent efforts to improve farming conditions, but there is insufficient data available to determine how widespread the efforts are.

Algae Are The Source Of omega-3s

Oils from fish contain two vital omega-3s, DHA and EPA. Fish feed on algae and get these omega-3s from that source. Vegetarian DHA supplements are made from the same types of algae. Taking supplements that contain the oils from fatty fish can guarantee that one’s body gets enough of DHA and EPA. However, the process by which the supplements are processed to remove the toxins and pollutants can also lessen the potency of the omega-3 acids.

Alpha-linolenic acid

Another omega-3 oil that the body needs is alpha-linolenic acid. The oil from flax seeds contains ALA. While the body cannot produce ALA itself, it can manufacture the other omega-3s that are needed if ALA is supplemented. The body is not very effective in converting ALA to other omega-3s, however, especially as people advance in age. Women’s bodies are designed to have a more efficient conversion rate than men’s because of women’s need to meet the nutritional needs of their babies during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Both oil from fish and oil from flax have both drawbacks and benefits

The best and most beneficial course of action is to eat modest amounts of fish, to either take oil supplements that derive from fatty fish, or supplement with vegetarian algae-based DHA supplements. This will ensure that one’s body receives the supplies of DHA and EPA that it needs.

However, caution should be exercised in not taking too many omega-3s. Adding flax oil ensures a necessary intake of alpha-linolenic acid that the oil from fish does not contain. Flax contains 8000 mg. of alpha-linolenic acid per tablespoon. ALA metabolically competes with the other essential acids that one’s body is unable to produce for itself.

The oil from fatty fish should be monitored to prevent too much omega-3 acid intake, while the oil from flax seeds helps the body produce those omega-3s without producing more than the body needs.

Does Fish Oil Lower High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure is a serious problem, particularly if the numbers remain consistently high. Understanding several ways of dealing with the potential problem is a key part of maintaining good health. Fish oil is a useful tool when trying to improve heart health, particularly when it relates to high blood pressure.

Study Findings

Research studies from the University of Cincinnati have discovered that fish oil can lower blood pressure when taken in a relatively high dosage. The dosage amount that is proven to lower blood pressure is between five and 15 grams per day. The large amount of oil was proven to lower diastolic pressure readings by an average of 4.4 mm Hg and the systolic pressure readings by an average of 6.5 mm Hg.

Beyond simply finding that the blood pressure reduced over the course of the study, consistent cholesterol testing proved that the fish oil supplementation did not have any negative impacts on cholesterol the way that traditional medication was shown to cause. While the amount provided to those in the study was a relatively high dosage, it was also designed for those who already have hypertension and have been taking medication for treatment.

The study concluded that it does help lower the blood pressure rates while having no negative impact or side effects on the body.

How It Works

Understanding how the fish oil works can make it easier to understand why blood pressure levels reduce within a short period of time.

One of the key benefits of fish oil is the omega-3 fatty acids. The acids help reduce blood pressure levels by acting as an anti-coagulant. The oil naturally makes the blood less sticky and thus makes it easier for the heart to move around the body. When the blood platelets stick together, it becomes harder to move blood through the body and thus the heart pumps harder.

The oil also helps decrease inflammation caused by the build-up of cholesterol and fat. When inflammation occurs from the fat deposits, the body will naturally face problems relating to blood pressure. Reducing inflammation helps smooth the transportation of blood despite the fat deposits.

A oil from fish is a useful way to help improve blood pressure levels. Hypertension is a serious problem that leads to heart attack, stroke and other severe problems if left unchecked. Fortunately, adding omega-3 fatty acids from fish to the daily plan will help reduce the numbers.

How to Remove Fish Oil Smell

Some odors wipe away with no effort at all. However, there are some that just never seem to go away no matter how hard you try. They soak into porous surfaces like wooden counter tops, cutting boards, fabric, carpet, wood flooring, wall materials, clothing, and even your skin. One of the absolute peskiest is fish oil smell. There is nothing quite as off-putting as coming into a room and wondering if you accidentally took a wrong turn into the seafood department. So how do you get rid of this aromatic pest?

Before you go reaching for an expensive odor remover product like Febreeze, remember that there is a cheap and natural solution available. Do you have some vinegar in your pantry? Wet a rag with it (use white vinegar if you do not want to introduce a colored stain to the area, especially if the affected area is porous) and try using that to clean the area. For example, a countertop with a bad fish oil smell should be wiped down vigorously with the rag, then wrung out in the sink, re-soaked with the vinegar, re-wrung, and so forth. To avoid wasting vinegar, you can partially dilute it with water.

Because vinegar has a strong smell of its own, you might think that you are just covering up the offending odor. This is not the case, however. Vinegar naturally helps to break down and remove tough odors. In addition, once it is wiped up, vinegar does not leave a lingering scent.

As strange as it sounds, another great way to remove tough odors (including the very tricky garlic or onion aroma, and even fish oil) is to use typical household toothpaste. Take some toothpaste and a damp rag and rub it vigorously into the area affected by the odor. Frequently wring out and rinse the rag, and reapply. Continue this process until the odor is gone.

Once you are confident that you have removed the odor, you can finish the job by wiping down the area with a bit of lemon juice and water. Not only does the citric acid in lemon juice make it a phenomenal cleaning agent, but it leaves a wonderful citrus smell behind when you're finished!

By following these easy tips, you'll have the fish oil smell gone in no time.

How to Make Fish Oil Taste Good

Fish oil is a healthy part of any diet due to the high content of omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for good health. Unfortunately, the fish oil taste is usually unpleasant due to the high concentration of fish and preservatives. Whether it is a capsule or a liquid fish oil supplement, the taste or aftertaste will make it hard to keep taking. Fortunately, it is possible to combat the unpleasant fish oil taste.

Put the Oil in the Fridge:

A simple trick to help reduce the overpowering flavor of the fish oil supplement is putting it in the fridge. The fridge will reduce the flavor so that the liquid or capsule is not as strong and thus is easier to take in any form.

Keeping the fish oil at room temperature will only make the flavor gradually stronger, which results in an unpleasant and sometimes even revolting taste.

Try Flavored Oils:

Fish oil liquid is available with different flavors, which is sometimes enough to make the oil palatable enough to take. While the flavor might not completely mask the original taste of fish, it can help complement the flavor and improve the taste. Citrus flavor is particularly complementary to fish oil, so a citrus flavored oil might taste good to some individuals.

Mix It Into Smoothies:

Hiding the overpowering taste often requires taking drastic measures. Mixing the fish oil into a fruit smoothie is a great way to hide the oil and get the health benefits without getting the unpleasant flavor.

Mixing the oil into smoothies is best when working with liquid fish oil. If the oil is in a capsule form, it is best to open the capsule and only put the oil into the mixture. Try adding the oil to several different types of smoothies to determine the one that best covers the flavor or tastes best to personal preferences.

Mix It With Yogurt or Applesauce:

Foods like yogurt, applesauce or cottage cheese are often able to subdue the taste of the fish oil and make it easier to eat. The key is mixing a small amount of oil into the food at one time and eating a few servings of the food throughout the day.

Hiding the taste of fish oil supplements is not always easy, particularly if the tongue is able to distinguish tastes well. Fortunately, trying out a few options like mixing it with yogurt or smoothies will result in finding something that works personally.

The Benefits of Sesame Oil

The Benefits of Sesame Oil

If you love sesame oil, then you will be pleased to know that it is a very healthy type of vegetable oil that you can use to cook your meals while benefiting from its rich nutrients. Sesame oil is derived from sesame seeds and it has been an essential cooking oil for many years; it is used all over the world from south India to China and Korea. The sesame seed has many health benefits and is rich in nutrients, including calcium.

What is sesame oil?

While speaking of what is sesame oil, it may be beneficial to know that this oil has long been in use in Asia, as it is one of the earliest forms of vegetable oils used over there. Thanks to the genius of whoever discovered it, more and more people are starting to explore the benefits of sesame oil for the hair, skin and body. The demand for sesame oil far outweighs its production and this is because of an inefficient manual process, which needs to be reevaluated

So What Are The Benefits of Using Sesame Oil

In addition to being a common cooking oil, sesame oil is also included in a number of medications and supplements because it provides the body with many of the nutrients it requires to heal; these nutrients include vitamin E and other antioxidants, calcium, zinc and magnesium. What makes this oil so precious is the fact that it does not have to be ingested to help one regain health. People who do not fancy the idea of cooking with sesame oil or using it in terms of medication or supplements may be interested in using it for massage because it makes the best massage oil.

Women discovered the benefits of sesame oil a while back and have been using it for some time as massage oil because of its ability to moisturize and renew the skin and make it soft, especially for women who have passed menopause and are suffering from dry skin. In addition to soft and moist skin, mothers use sesame oil to massage their babies; it improves the nervous system and brain.

Vitamin E is especially essential in people with high cholesterol because it lowers fatty acids significantly. When the oil is used to cook meals everyday, it will lower the cholesterol in the blood and over a period of time, it will help in regaining optimum and balanced bodily functions. Bowel function, blood circulation, insomnia - they are all results of irregular and imbalanced body functions that people all over the world treat through the use of sesame oil.

Blocked arteries and diabetes are common conditions that for a long time have been the demise of many people but experts have discovered that this oil is capable of undoing blocked arteries thereby alleviating medical conditions like angina and extending the health and life of people with cholesterol and diabetes.

Sesame Oil And Hair Growth

It is also common to find sesame oil for hair being sold and this is because its nutrients, if added to the body, will boost health significantly and strengthen the hair. A handful of sesame seeds have three times more calcium than a cup of milk and its other nutrients essential to the growth and sustenance of healthy hair are just as concentrated; this is the reason people were using sesame oil for therapeutic purposes centuries ago. Sesamin, sesamolin, Vitamin B1, iron, fiber, and protein - these are some of the nutrients in sesame oil and they are the reasons why it makes hair glow.

Where to find sesame oil?

For those asking where to find sesame oil, there is a significant worldwide shortage of it that would explain why the seeds are imported at hefty prices. Indian sesame oil is yellow while that of East Asia has a darker tan and looks browner; but their quality, in terms of nutritional value, is enough to boost anybody’s health. In case you want to know where to find sesame oil, most health shops in the west sell it. An alternative is to look it up online.

Sesame Oil Side Effects?

The major advantage of using natural products to boost health is that they do not come with side effects and adding a tablespoon of sesame oil to your daily diet guarantees alleviated levels of health and longevity for any person. Some people prefer to incorporate the health advantages of sesame in different variations either in oil form or just as seeds, and some prefer to add sesame leaves to their salad. The aroma in the leaves would explain why the herb is popular in a lot of Korean salads and soups.

Whether you are using sesame oil for your hair, diabetes or just for taste, you will have the advantage of improved overall health because it carries so many health benefits and the body will absorb all of these nutrients quickly. During a massage, sesame oil rebuilds damaged capillaries and deals with problems like itching, dryness, fungal infections on the skin, rashes and sunburn and leave the skin evenly toned and healthy. However, apart from simple body health and cosmetics, the oil is also important for industrial use. It is used in drip solutions when patients need to take their medication intravenously. The oil is also used in insecticides and to coat stored grain because it prevents weevil attack. Like sunflower oil, sesame oil is also used in oil pulling.

Some of the oils which add nutritional value to the body include cod-liver oil and primrose oil, which if consumed together with sesame oil will in a large part boost the general health of the body and assist in the regular metabolic functions of the body. Taking natural oils ensures the body gets maximum protecting from the elements and maintains a healthy balance without the possibility of side effects, as would be the case with chemical medication.

The only possible downside to using sesame oil is that it can trigger allergic reactions and lead to anaphylaxis or other complications in some individuals. This is rare though, and most people can use it with worrying about such problems.
